Unrequited Love

This February, MiXX presents Unrequited Love, a two-artist show featuring work from painters Adde Russell and Cyrus Walker. Charged with pensive color palettes and beguiling narrative threads, the richly layered exhibit embodies a brooding air of longing and introspection.

In her captivating oils, Russell juxtaposes meticulous realism with arresting moments of painterly expressionism. The resulting works are complex and visually dense, with a bewitching sense of mystery that resists fixed notions of meaning. Though aesthetically distinct, Walker’s paintings cultivate a similar atmosphere of contemplation and inscrutability. Rendered with a nod to mid-century illustration, his comic book cowboys are cast in grave, uncannily hued tableaus that upend the viewer’s expectations of one-dimensional tropes that have become ubiquitous within Western Americana.
