Milk Moon is pleased to present Topography of Belonging, a group show featuring work by Carolynn Haydu, Brenda Bogart, and Meredith Nemirov. Working with paper and paint, the three artists deal with place, materiality, and the intersections of how we both shape and are shaped by our environments.

Oakland, California based mixed media artist Carolynn Haydu works with paper that she paints, dyes, and stains by hand to create rich, three-dimensional wall pieces. While abstract in nature, her artworks use pattern, texture, and form to describe the character of the vibrant and wild places that define her California home.

Collage artist, Brenda Bogart utilizes paper as her preferred medium, as well. Drawing on her vast library of found paper – pulled from antique books, maps, magazines, and a myriad of more unlikely places – Bogart constructs visually dense ‘paper paintings’ that pay homage to the flora, fauna, and culture of her Texas home.

From her studio in nearby Ridgway, Colorado, painter Meredith Nemirov has spent the last few years focused on an ongoing project that marries art, conservation, and cartography. Using vintage geological and topographical maps as her substrate, Nemirov paints abundant waterways and flourishing aspen groves onto the landscapes as a way of re-imagining an American Southwest free from drought.
