This Must be the Place
Melissa Loop // Carolynn Haydu // Julia Lucey
January 7th – February 6th, 2025
Featuring work from Melissa Loop, Carolynn Haydu, and Julia Lucey, 'This Must Be the Place' is a lush, exuberant show that transports the viewer from the physical and emotional confines of a bleak midwinter to a psycho-spiritual oasis of soothing optimism. Borrowing its title from the Talking Heads' perennial hit of the same name, our January exhibit embodies the uplifting ease and open-ended sense of place distilled in their simple but beautiful love song. Our featured artists' works deal with ideas of place – whether material, metaphorical, or imagined – and the meaning we draw from it. From Julia Lucey’s collaged aquatint etchings of native flora and fauna from the American West Coast, to Carolynn Haydu's abstract relief paintings (named for beloved open spaces in the California wilderness), the artworks exhibited in 'This Must Be the Place' are something like love songs themselves, odes to the extraordinary things we find in the everyday.
